New year renewal
Sue Butterfield, spa director at The Sagamore in New York’s Adirondack Mountains and co-creator of the spa’s Resolution Weekend, offers these strategies for making a lasting commitment to better health.
LEE ANN STIFF Keep your body moving. Regular exercise invigorates body and mind, boosts the immune system, and helps melt unwanted pounds. Eat an organic diet. Ingest only foods free of genetically modified organisms (a source of allergens), produced without potentially toxic artificial pesticides and fertilizers, and derived from animals raised without the use of antibiotics or other drugs. Use natural, nontoxic, earth-friendly products. Additives to avoid: sodium lauryl sulfate, parabens, mineral oil, diethanolamine, and synthetic colors and fragrances. Nibble dark chocolate. Higher in antioxidant flavonoids than milk chocolate, it packs in more salubrious benefits (like promoting normal blood pressure and circulation). Look for bars that contain at least 70 percent cocoa. Connect with nature each day. Slowing down to absorb the Earth’s healing energies helps bring harmony into your life.
