Most day spas and salons offer pedicures; for $35-$65 you get a one-hour treatment that will leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated. Professional pedicures generally include a cleansing foot soak; filing of corns, calluses, and dry skin areas; a moisturizing treatment; cuticle shaping; nail trimming and cleaning; and the application of nail polish. Some pedicures also include a brief foot massage.

     Ifyou do go to a salon for your pedicure, make sure that the pedicurist is experienced, licensed, and working at a reputable spa or salon. Your pedicurist should have her state license posted at her work station. When you call for an appointment, you can ask about qualifications, training, and licensing.
     Health note: There are a few things that professional pedicurists should not do to your feet, especially if you have diabetes. If you need your corns and calluses shaved or cut, or if you need your cuticles cut, see a doctor.

Sterilization
    The most important question to ask when you call for a pedicure appointment is what procedure the salon has in place to properly sterilize the pedicure implements. Procedures may differ from state to state and from salon to salon. Some pedicurists scrub used implements with a brush and soap, then soak: them in disinfectant solution for 20-30 minutes. Some also place implements in steam or dry heat. Implements should be stored in sterile containers. Find out if the salon’s procedures include some form of sterilization using hospital-grade disinfectant solution that kills bacteria, fungus, and viruses like HIV and hepatitis. Some salons may use disposable implements, or include in the cost ofthe pedicure your own kit that you can bring with you each time you have a pedicure. Some implements, like emery boards and orange sticks, cannot be cleaned and should be thrown away after use.

Home Pedicures
     If you don’t have the time, money, or energy to get a professional pedicure, give yourself one at home. Better yet, invite a friend over and give each other pedicures
