Dance of life
When fitness meets self-expression, both body and mind reap the benefits.
Creating a synergistic experience, Nia (Neuromuscular Integrative Action) is based on the belief that through movement we find health. According to Cal-a-Vie’s fitness director Judy Wood, Nia provides a safe haven for personal expression in a dance format that accommodates all ages and fitness levels.
A typical 50-minute session takes place in a big, open space that allows the participants (usually barefoot) to move freely throughout. Though classes vary in format and flow, all are set to music and include movement forms from the martial, dance, and healing arts. Self-guided according to each body’s “innate intelligence” (the way it naturally wants to move), these motions impart not only cardiovascular benefits but also a heightened sense of self by bringing mind, body, and spirit together. Whether you practice at a spa (in addition to Cal-a-Vie, you can find Nia at Canyon Ranch, Golden Door, Lake Austin Spa Resort, and Red Mountain Spa) or at home (the Global Unity DVD is a great introduction to the movements, as is the book The Nia Technique), you can count on dancing to your own healing rhythm.
